Comments Please!

Well, I believe I’ve fixed my comments problem [that they couldn't be left!] — although the fix only seems to work with new posts [like this one]. Please test this for me – leave me a comment! NOTE: the input box might be off the bottom of the screen

I believe the problem was caused by my IIS setup *not* recognizing index.php as a valid index-page-type.

For example, if you were to click Comments link for this post, you’ll see something like this:

http://www.peetm.com/blog/?p=9#respond

Note that the ‘path’ doesn’t include a page name — the page that parameter ?p=9#respond should be passed to. I manually entered this link as

http://www.peetm.com/blog/index.php?p=9#respond and everything seemed to work — well, things got further anyway!

So, how to have http://www.peetm.com/blog/ imply that index.php should be loaded and that ?p=9#respond should be passed to that page?

Valid default pages are specified as part of the IIS web-service. So, I had to access specify the names of valid index pages, and then restart the web-service service [not very hard when one spots the problem!]. Anyway – hopefully that’s fixed it!

No doubt there’ll be a few more. Still, I’m learning more and more everytime they do!

Fry Night

Ξ September 29th, 2007 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Mumble |

It seems like it was ‘Stephen Fry Night’ on BBC 2 yesterday.

We had ‘Who Do You Think You Are’, then the ‘Slug Balancer’, courtesy of Black Adder, something called ‘Guilty’, ‘Room 101’, and finally an episode of ‘QI’. It was great.

I don’t think there’s any aspect of Fry that I don’t like – in fact, that I don’t think is pretty damn fantastic! He’s someone who I *really* wish I knew – I think we’d share a fair bit of common-ground. I actually fantasise about being able to just chat to him!

Actually, BBC 4 had a Stephen Fry night recently, on 8th September [which passed me by sadly], but part of that is being re-broadcast tonight on BBC2.

Stephen Fry: 50 Not Out

Comedian, actor, director, writer, presenter – need we go on? This one-off special celebrates the 50th birthday of the multi-talented Stephen Fry.

He’s just 3 days older than me … perhaps he’ll have some good advice for dealing with being 50!

Fun Stephen Fry stuff:

Wikipedia Trivia including:

“Fry has lent his voice to an alarm clock where he reprises his role of Jeeves to gently wake the owner.” – I want one [pity it looks a bit crap though]! Try the various sample of wake-up messages!

Sodding About

I *must* stop sodding about, I must stop sodding about, …

But, I have fixed my Blog Roll problems, and, as part of my sodding about, I’ve now incorporated the top 5 BBC Technology news items. I love php!

Bloody typical!

Ξ September 28th, 2007 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Mumble |

So, WordPress 2.3 is just out, and, when I just upgraded, it seems to have shagged my installation! Typical, I have WP installed for a day or two, a new version arrives and everything goes tits up – lol! Don’t you just love software. It was also typical that I didn’t backup my database [well, it did only have one thing in it!]

The only reason I upgraded in the first place was that the 2.2 version wasn’t working quite right under IIS – try adding a comment to this post and you’ll see what the problem is.

Oh well, if I can be asked, I’ll have a go at fixing this [a 'permalink problem' I think], or move the installation across to a Linux box and apache. btw, it’s not the webserver, it’s not having .htaccess that’s causing problems. 3rd option … just wait for someone else to come up with a fix!

Oh – and another thing – my ‘Blog Roll’ is screwed for the same reason [template incompatibility] – so that’s the end of that for now.

First post

Ξ September 27th, 2007 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Mumble |

Having just installed WordPress, this is my first post.

I installed WordPress because my good friend Brian Clegg asked me if I blog.

I have done ‘the b word’ from time to time, e.g., I used to have a LiveJournal, and I used to post some stuff on GeeksWithBlogs. However, I gave up doing that sort of thing a while back. Possibly because I had nothing of interest to say [or can I be THAT busy?]

WordPress is, um, interesting: the software seems pretty damn good, but some of the themes, widgets, templates and what have you leave a little to be desired. Possibly it’s me though – not really knowing just yet how best to edit them and play with their settings etc. However, it’s not all bad – I found PSPad to help me! Still, that just means I’ll waste more time playing with that now!

I like the theme I’m using at the moment – reminds me of Oxford, Wolfson College, and in particular, the view one gets when wandering down the river path from Wolfson, and into The Parks/science-area [one of the very best reasons to choose Wolfson IMHO].

Sadly, Wolfson’s a bit ‘wrecked’ for me right now [personal reasons] – and I stay away from it more or less all of the time. Still, I’ll return and feel comfortable there one day I hope.
